It is interesting that in the digital age, demonstration of exclusivity and distinction is still defined in physical terms. 
As the author refers to the Amex’s Centurion (“Black”) card, the demonstration has less to do with value of the raw materials, but rather the uniqueness of the design and its significance of rarity.
